applying a spray tanSpray tanning is a great way to achieve a golden glow and maintain a healthy-looking, even tan without being exposed to the sun's rays or a tanning bed.  Spray tanning claims to provide a flawless result unlike previous sunless tanning methods which could leave your skin looking orange, streaky and patchy.

Spray tanning involves the therapist applying a special mist to the body and is often done in a booth. The mist contains dihydroxyacetone (DHA) which reacts with dead skin cells by dyeing them brown and making the skin look like it has a natural tan. Depending on the brand of spray tan used the mist will be either water or oil based.  If you have sensitive skin make sure your spray tan is water based.

Most spas and salons offer different types of mists so that you can select the level of tanning. If you are fairer then you should choose the lighter mist as opting for a spray tan which is too dark for your natural colouring will look fake.

Most spray tans will last up to approximately ten days, however there are certain measures you can take (before and after your spray tanning session) to ensure that your tan lasts as long as possible.

The DHA dyes the top layer of your skin so your spray tan will wear off once the top layer of dead skin peels off. To slow up the skin shedding and prolong the life of your spray tan exfoliate before the treatment and moisturise your skin every day after it.  After having a spray tan to allow the DHA to take full effect you should not shower and refrain from activity which may cause you sweat for a minimum of four hours.  If you follow these simple steps you should be able to maintain a tan for about five days.
