Thalassotherapy in Spain
The word Thalassotherapy derives from the Greek for "sea" and refers to a variety of marine treatments that use seawater, seaweed, algae, mud or sand to tone, moisturise and revitalise the body and skin.
Thalassotherapy treatments include mud baths, underwater showers, hydro-massage, aromatherapy and seaweed, mud and algae wraps.
You could benefit from thalassotherapy if you suffer from circulatory problems (hypertension and arteriosclerosis); respiratory conditions (asthma and bronchitis); post-traumatic disorders (muscle atrophy) or chronic inflammations (rheumatoid arthritis).
It provides relaxation, aids muscle tone, cleanses your skin, reduces cellulite, boosts your immune system and aids restful sleep.
Thalassotherapy is often prescribed and you might be asked detailed questions about your health and medical history. If you are pregnant some treatments are not suitable for you.
Before you go for thalassotherapy treatment check what you should wear as some treatments require swimwear. If you are having mud, clay or algae treatments then it a good idea to tie your hair back.
Different kinds of thalassotherapy include:
- Ionisation: to heal the upper respiratory tract where the seawater is ionised with negative ions and is inhaled or sprayed
- Hydromassage: underwater massage with jets of water. If you are using an aqua gym strong water jets will target various muscle groups while you gently work out in a pool with your body supported by the resistance of the water.
- Vinothérapie: combines thermal spring water and inigo-elements with wine and grape extracts to strengthen blood vessels and enhance circulation
- Seaweed, mud or algae wrap: where you will be completely covered in seaweed and herb-soaked cloths for about an hour. When the wraps are removed the therapist will massage your body to enhance circulation.
- Balneotherapy: water-based therapies that use seawater or thermal spring water to improve your circulation.
