before and after dental veneersDental veneers can transform crooked, stained, damaged and badly worn teeth into a straight white smile.

Veneers are wafer thin laminates or tooth coloured material (which can be porcelain, ceramic or composite bonding material) that are cemented on  to the front surface of teeth to improve their cosmetic appearance.

Really dental veneers do for your teeth what false nails do for your hands.

There are a wide variety of reasons for having dental veneers fitted:

  • badly stained teeth  that cannot be improved by teeth whitening can greatly be improved by dental veneers
  • teeth that have become badly worn, chipped or broken can benefit from veneers. A small chip can quickly be repaired with composite veneers and a single damaged tooth can easily be repaired with a single porcelain veneer that has the same characteristics and colour as your other teeth so that it looks natural.
  • spaces or gaps between your teeth can be easily closed using dental veneers to give you a more even smile.
  • for crooked teeth veneers can be placed over their front surface to give a perfectly aligned smile.

Porcelain are the most popular type of veneers as they offer a natural looking, translucent tooth-like appearance which is stronger and more durable alternative to its composite counterpart which is also prone to staining.  Composite veneers are much cheaper than porcelain veneers, but do not last as long and need replacing more often. Porcelain veneers will usually last between 5-10 years and composite veneers maybe a year or two at the most.

Composite work is used for small chips as it preserves more of your natural tooth structure. When veneers are fitted a tiny amount of the front surface of your teeth will be shaved off. An impression of your teeth is taken and sent to a dental laboratory that use the impression to cast an accurate model of your teeth to be used as a guide to fabricate your new veneers.

This process can take between one to three weeks. Before your dentist fits the new veneers your teeth will be thoroughly cleaned and the front surfaces roughened with a special acid gel to provide a firm surface for the dental cement to stick to. The veneers are cemented into place and a special curing light is used to activate the dental cement so that it permanently bonds the veneer. Any excess cement is trimmed away and polished to leave beautiful and natural looking teeth.
