audiologist testing patients earIf you have difficulty in distinguishing conversations (especially when there is background noise): occasionally suffer from tinnitus (which is a hissing, roaring, or ringing in the ears: listen to the radio or television with the volume level up way above normal or experience dizziness, loss of balance or fatigue then a trip to an audiologist could be the answer.

If you have hearing, balance or other related ear problems an audiologist will examine you using audiometers, computers and other testing devices to measure the loudness at which you start to hear sounds, your ability to distinguish between sounds and the impact of hearing loss on your daily life. Audiologists also use computer equipment to diagnose balance disorders. Audiologists who diagnose and treat balance disorders often work in collaboration with physicians and occupational therapists.

Hearing disorders can result from a variety of causes which include trauma at birth, viral infections, genetic disorders, exposure to loud noise, reaction to medication or just the general aging process.  Treatment may involve examining and cleaning the ear canal, fitting hearing aids or fitting and programming cochlear implants. A hearing aid is an electronic, battery-operated device that receives sound through a microphone and converts the sound waves into electrical signals that are amplified and sent to the ear through a speaker. Treatment offered by an audiologist should include advice on how to adjust to hearing loss and training on the use of various hearing instruments.

An audiologist should offer you the option of being evaluated with a hearing aid that can be programmed in several different ways so you can appreciate all the advantages. They should make sure your personal needs will be satisfied by fitting a hearing aid.  Make sure you check out the warranty of any device that you are fitted with as if you are unhappy with it most manufacturers allow a 30 to 60 day trial period when hearing aids can be returned for a refund.

Some audiologists specialise in treating the elderly, children, or hearing-impaired individuals who need special programmes to be drawn up. Others protect workers’ hearing from on-the-job injuries by measuring noise levels in workplaces and advising on hearing protection.
