Spanish Hospices
In Spain (and all other predominantly Catholic countries) the word hospice (hospiciano) has negative connotations meaning poverty and orphanage, so emphasis has been placed on the integration of these services within the mainstream health care system. Catalonia is one of the few places where hospices have been set up and there is the Cudeca Hospice in Marbella which is run by British volunteers and is a charity funded by private donations.

Europe is in fact very different from the UK as far as the provision of palliative care (hospices are concerned. But although there are no MacMillan nurses here and very few hospices, Spain is number three in Europe for the treatment of breast cancer whilst the UK is down at 15.
So palliative care in Spain is based on palliative care units, support teams and home care – not hospices as in the UK and Ireland.
