Liposuction in Spain
Liposuction can be used in combination with other cosmetic surgery procedures including a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), breast reduction or face-lift.
Liposuction is mainly used to reshape one or more areas of your body - not to reduce body weight.
It is not used to treat obesity and will not get rid of cellulite or stretch marks, but is for problem areas that have not responded well to diet and exercise.
These are most usually on the outer thighs and hips on women and the waist and back on men, but the face, neck, abdomen, back, buttocks, legs and upper arms are also commonly treated areas.
Liposuction may also be used to treat certain medical conditions which include:
- Benign fatty tumors
- Abnormal enlargement of the male breasts
- Problems with metabolism of fat in the body
- Excessive sweating under the armpits
Liposuction removes fat from your body using suction. The traditional method is where thin blunt-tipped tubes are inserted through tiny incisions in the skin which suction the fat out while being moved around to target specific deposits.
Tumescent liposuction is considered the safest and most effective technique and has the quickest recovery time. You are given a local anaesthetic to numb the area of your body where the tubes will be inserted and an anaesthetic solution is injected into the fatty tissue causing it to expand and become firmer, enabling the tubes to move smoothly under the skin. This procedure causes the blood vessels to temporarily shrink which reduces blood loss during the procedure.
Ultrasound-assisted (ultrasonic) liposuction is a newer technique which uses energy created by ultrasound to liquefy the fat and enable the tubes to move more smoothly under the skin. This technique is good for areas with large amounts of fat or where it is very firm or fibrous in the side of the body, back, male breasts and the area around the navel. Ultrasound-assisted liposuction can take 2 to 4 hours longer than tumescent liposuction.
Liposuction does not normally require an overnight hospital stay unless a large volume of fat is being removed. After the procedure the treated area is firmly wrapped to help reduce swelling, bruising, and pain. You may have to wear a compression garment or wrap for 3 to 4 weeks and should expect a lot of bruising and swelling for at least the first 7 to 10 days. With tumescent liposuction fluid may drain from the incision sites for several days and you might be given antibiotics to reduce the risk of infection.
You are usually able to get up and move around as soon as the treatment is finished and the effects of any sedation have worn off. Most people can return to work within a few days, but recovery may take longer if large areas are treated.
Liposuction is very effective at removing fat deposits in small areas, but if you regain the weight after the procedure then the bulges that were removed are likely to return. People who expect liposuction to help them lose weight are usually disappointed
Liposuction does not tighten the skin over the treated area and it can remain loose and take up to six months for it to tighten around the treated area. Younger skin tends to have greater elasticity than older skin. The full effects of having liposuction may not be visible for several months to a year.
Common side effects of liposuction include:
- Temporary swelling, bruising, soreness, and numbness in and around the treated areas. (Tumescent liposuction minimises these effects)
- Irritation and minor scarring around the incision sites where the tubes were inserted.
- Baggy or rippling skin which will usually tighten after a few months.
Less common side effects include:
- Permanent colour changes in the skin.
- Uneven skin surface over the treated area.
- Damage to the nerves and skin as heat generated during ultrasonic liposuction may burn the skin or damage the tissue under it.
