physio in action

Physiotherapists regard human movement as central to your health and well-being and they maximise movement potential through health promotion, preventive healthcare, treatment and rehabilitation by using manual therapy, therapeutic exercise hydrotherapy and hi-tech equipment.

Physiotherapy is sometimes referred to as physio concentrates on problems that affect muscles, bones, the heart and lungs and circulation.

It involves a range of treatments, including manipulation, massage, exercise, electrotherapy and hydrotherapy.

Physiotherapy is often used to treat conditions that occur as you get older, such as arthritis, osteoporosis and hip and joint replacements.

It is also an important part of general care for elderly people by helping them to stay active and improve their fitness.

Following are some of the areas in which physiotherapists work:

  • outpatients
  • intensive care
  • women’s health
  • care of the elderly
  • stroke patients
  • orthopaedics
  • mental illness
  • learning difficulties
  • occupational health
  • terminally ill
  • paediatrics

Cardiovascular and pulmonary rehabilitation is used to treat conditions affecting the heart and lungs and after surgery and may be recommended for people who have suffered heart attacks or obstructive pulmonary disease.  It can also be used to assist sufferers with neurological conditions that affect the nervous system such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, a stroke and cerebral palsy.

Sports injuries and arthritis are treated by strength training, heat packs (applying a controlled amount of heat to the affected joints) and electrical stimulation.

Finally physiotherapy is used to treat children who have conditions like cerebral palsy or muscular dystrophy as it can help to improve their balance, strength and co-ordination.
