While most famous for aesthetic surgery, plastic surgery (where skin grafting is one of the most common procedures) also includes a variety of fields including laser surgery, microdermabrasion and liposuction

Reconstructive Plastic Surgery is usually performed to improve function and correct impairments caused by burns (contracture) , injuries like facial bone fractures, congenital abnormalities like a cleft lip or the removal of cancers or tumors: breast reconstruction (mastectomy for a breast cancer), a head and neck cancer and abdominal invasion by a colon cancer

Plastic surgeons use microsurgery to transfer tissue for coverage of a defect when no local tissue is available.

Tissue flaps of skin, muscle, bone or fat (or a combination) are removed from the body, transferred to another area and reconnected to a blood supply by suturing arteries and veins as small as 1-2 mm in diameter.

Cosmetic Surgery restricts itself to the enhancement of appearance through surgical and medical techniques. It is mainly concerned with maintaining or restoring a normal appearance or enhancing it toward some aesthetic ideal.

The most popular aesthetic/cosmetic procedures are listed below:

  • Abdominoplasty  - (tummy tuck): reshaping and firming of the abdomen
  • Blepharoplasty - (eyelid surgery): reshaping of the eyelids or the application of permanent eyeliner
  • Mammoplasty: Breast augmentation (breast enlargement or boob job) involving either fat grafting, saline or silicone gel prosthetics
  • Breast reduction: removal of skin and glandular tissue to reduce back and shoulder pain in women
  • Breast lift (Mastopexy): lifting or reshaping of breasts to make them less saggy (often after weight loss) involving removal of breast skin rather than glandular tissue
  • Buttock augmentation (butt implants): procedure to enhance buttocks by using silicone implants or fat grafting and transfer from other areas of the body
  • Chemical peel: minimizing the appearance of acne and other scars as well as wrinkles
