silicone breast implants Breast augmentation (Augmentation Mammaplasty) is a procedure to cosmetically enhance the size and shape of a woman's breasts using implants which are either a silicone rubber shell filled with either silicone gel or saline. Silicone gel has an excellent texture as a filling material because it is soft and pliable (feeling like natural breast tissue) and allows natural movement.

The breast implant is normally inserted through an incision made in the natural crease beneath the breast, but it is also possible to make the incision in the armpit or around the edge of the areola. The incisions are closed by using fine, dissolving sutures which will be taped for better support.

Breast augmentation surgery usually takes around 1 hour and 30 minutes to complete using a general anaesthetic and normally includes an overnight stay at the hospital. You will feel tired and sore for a few days after the surgery and will have slight swelling and bruising.

After surgery you will wear a bandeau for about 14 days to make sure the breast stay in a secure position implants. In most cases no bra is recommended for 6 weeks. You will be out of bed on the same day as your surgery and light exercise, such as gentle walking, is permitted at one week and more vigorous exercise at two weeks.

You may return to a regular exercise schedule at three weeks but you should avoid lifting weights for a week longer. Most patients return to work within seven days:  air travel is permitted after 5 days and you may drive after 7-10 days (automatic transmission is easier than a manual one). No heavy lifting (greater than 5 pounds) is recommended for 10 days.
