laser skin resurfacingLaser skin treatment uses a carbon dioxide laser to vaporize and remove the upper layers of skin so that new rejuvenated skin reforms. Laser skin treatment has similar effects to micro-dermabrasion and chemical peels (it is sometimes referred to as a laser peel). The technology may be different but the changes that occur in the skin are much the same as the top layers of skin are removed, the underlying dermis is exposed generating a new top layer of skin that is softer, smoother and less wrinkled.

The laser is a very precise beam and can be directed on to any part of the skin, including damaged areas and wrinkles and fine lines, particularly around the eyes and mouth. It can be used to make mild scarring or burns less noticeable, to remove tattoos, and treat port wine stains, acne scars and spider veins. At the same time it stimulates the body’s natural healing process to create new collagen and produce a fresher, smoother, healthier looking skin.

It is an ideal treatment for all skin types and is a popular treatment for both men and women and for young and older skins, and the number of treatments required will depend on the problem being treated and the laser used, but the effects may last anything 3 - 10 years or even longer.  The long term results will also depend on your skin care regime.

Laser skin resurfacing is used to regenerate changes in the epidermis and an increase in the amount of collagen in the dermis. These changes are accompanied by an improved distribution of melanin and also by an increase in blood supply to the skin.

Laser skin resurfacing is carried out under local anaesthetic and sedation with recovery time after depending on the depth of laser penetration. Because laser skin treatments  are very precise they cause virtually no bleeding, and aftercare is important but there is rarely any post procedure discomfort.  It is far less invasive than a surgical facelift and intense pulsed light therapy (IPL) can be used in conjunction with the normal laser to reduce scarring caused by acne or chicken pox.

The final results of laser skin treatment may take a few months to appear fully but then most people notice a significant improvement. The natural ageing process means that the effects of laser skin resurfacing are not permanent but a re-treatment several years later is possible.
