Spanish vet with carWith the Pets Travel Scheme (PETS) it is now possible to take most family pets to Spain without having to put them into quarantine, so you will be delighted to hear that there are a large number of veterinary practices in Spain offering high standards of care (equal to the UK and Ireland) at reasonable prices, and a high percentage have English speaking staff and surgeons.

If you are planning to move permanently to Spain it is advisable that you register with a vet as soon as possible.  Also if your pet has a history of ill health it is advisable to make sure your UK vet forwards this information to your new vet in Spain so that they have a full case history of your animal.Domestic pets in Spain should be chipped by a local vet.

It is also advisable to have dogs vaccinated against rabies and other diseases such as distemper and hard pad, and cats immunised against feline infectious enteritis, leukaemia and typhus.  Vaccinations are recorded on certificates in the same format as in the UK with due dates of boosters noted on the animal’s file.  Most vets send reminders of when these vaccinations are due.

The services offered are similar to those in the UK and Ireland including out of hours and emergency contact.  Reasonably priced pet hotels, boarding kennels and catteries can also be found here.If you are planning to get a pet when you arrive in Spain then a veterinary practice is a good place to start as they often taken in abandoned pets for adoption or can recommend a good animal shelter or breeder in the area. You should consider taking out health insurance for your pets as although most treatment charges are lower here the costs soon mount up.
